How to Find Your Signature Sound as a Musician or Music Producer
FINDING YOUR SIGNATURE SOUND
Today, I want to share with you one thing that will change your music career entirely. As musicians and music producers, we all long for a signature sound that instantly connects with listners and make them say "That's You". Your signature is the sonic fingerprint that set you apart from the crowd.
If you don't have any for now, or you can't figure it out, relax. You're not alone. It's a journey any music maker embarks on. The breakthrough of Zlatan Ibile, a Nigerian rapper can said to be his intro signature "Kapaichumarimarichupako", which became a popular slang in the late 2019. Infact, the signature is the reason for his breakthrough. However, you shouldn't be so bothered if you haven't find yours. Overtime, it will come naturally.
DISCOVER YOUR MUSICAL DNA
Your signature sound is not something you invent overnight. It emerges organically from your influence, creative choices, inspiration, and experience.
Sometimes, you need to explore outside your genre, style, and even music entirely. Do you know some people get their unique sound signature from movies? Yeah, and they managed to leverage it in their craft.
Harness your strength. Focus more on your ability musically instead of struggling with your weakness. I'd work with artists that say "Please mix my vocal and let it sound like Wizkid". That is wrong. You have something unique in your voice too, work on it and you will be surprised at the result.
One of my unique ability is creating backgorund VOXthat accompanies the instruments on my beat. We all know Don Jazzy as king of intro. You have yours too, only if you're confident enough to embrace and build on it.
Think outside the box. As a music producer, feel free to explore your DAW. As an artist, explore more genres of different decades. Find what resonates with you. Most time, your unique signature is hidden behind new explorations.
As a music producer, experiment with audio effects and you will be surprised at the outcome. Musician can also do this. Omahlay changed the way we use reverb since he came with his kind of big, lushy reverb fx, you can do the same.
Lastly, consistency is the key to almost everything. Be consistent enough and you will surely find your unique sound. I hope this is helpful.
