HOW TO ACHIEVE CLEAN MIX with YUNGPROBEATZ The Nawti Producer
SAY NO TO MUDDY MIX
It can be frustrating when after all you could try, your production still sound muddy. This has caused many aspiring mixing engineer to give up or settle for less. Your mix is cool, but it can be better, and I believe there’s always room for improvement in whatever we do. Are you a mixing engineer struggling with muddy mix? Let’s treat it at once.
If your final mix is muddy, several factors should be considered:
1. SOURCE:
From my decade of experience, I’ve got to realise that mixing starts with the choice of elements you’re putting together. Select quality samples. Most time, I don’t do nothing on the drums; no reverb, delay, or Eq, because I do carefully and intentionally select my samples. This little secret is a game changer if you’re struggling with clean mix. Select samples that works together without masking.
2. FILTERING
Understanding frequency is important as a mixing engineer. Most muddy mixes are caused by clashing frequencies. Meticulously separate each and every element by finding space for them within the spectrum. This is achievable by filtering or better said in mixing language; Equalizing any clashing elements. High/Low Pass Eq; depending on your mixing goal.
3. REVERB & DELAY
Sometimes, you don’t need any effect on that sample. It’s just perfect like that. When I started mixing, I tried out several techniques. I consumed many information watching YouTube tutorials, and I was always eager to try my new knowledge on the next project, even if the project doesn’t necessarily need it. Minimal is always better. Don’t overdo it, especially delay and reverb.
4. PANNING
Since muddy mix often result from several samples/elements fighting for space, why not treat them like two dogs in the same room barking at each other because of food. My instance is kinda crazy, right? Yeah! Two angry dogs won’t let you sleep. Save yourself the stress by putting the dogs in separate spaces. There you go.
Don’t be afraid to (hard) pan sounds.
5. CONCLUSIVELY, keep mixing.
The more you mix, the better you’ll become at mixing.
